“Can I just do half a syringe?” is one of the questions I hear most often about lip filler. The answer is often yes, and it’s a great way to start. At Serene Med Spa in Hudson, Ohio and Barboursville, West Virginia, a half syringe of lip filler is $300, and a full syringe is $500. Both prices are the same at both offices.

How much is 0.5 mL?

It sounds tiny, and it is. Half a milliliter is about one-tenth of a teaspoon. But the lips are small and very visible, so a little filler, placed carefully, makes a real difference.

A full 1 mL syringe is about one-fifth of a teaspoon; a half syringe is about one-tenth.

Who a half syringe is right for

If you want clearly fuller lips, or your lips are naturally very thin, a half syringe may feel underwhelming. That’s when I usually recommend a full syringe.

Volbella XC or Ultra XC for a half syringe?

We use two FDA-approved Juvéderm lip fillers. Both are hyaluronic acid gels with built-in lidocaine for comfort, and both can be dissolved if ever needed.

In the FDA lip studies, results for both lasted up to about a year. With a half syringe, expect results on the shorter side of that range, since there’s less product to break down.

Why a half syringe isn’t exactly half the price

Once a syringe is opened, the leftover gel can’t be saved for later or used on another patient. So even with a half syringe, the product, sterile supplies, numbing and injector time are almost the same as a full treatment. At $300, a half syringe is 60% of a full syringe, which is in line with how most practices price it. And if you’re on the fence, a full syringe gives you twice the product for $200 more.

What to expect

Frequently asked questions

How much is half a syringe of lip filler at Serene?

A half syringe (about 0.5 mL) of Juvéderm Volbella XC or Ultra XC is $300 at both our Hudson, OH and Barboursville, WV offices. A full 1 mL syringe is $500.

Why isn’t a half syringe exactly half the price?

An opened syringe can’t be saved or shared with another patient, so the product cost, sterile supplies and injector time are almost the same as a full treatment.

Is 0.5 mL of lip filler enough?

For a first treatment, a subtle refresh, lip lines or a touch-up, often yes. If you want clearly fuller lips or have very thin lips, a full syringe usually gives a better result.

Which filler is better for a half syringe, Volbella or Ultra XC?

Volbella XC is often our first choice for a subtle half-syringe result because it is softer and tends to cause less swelling. Ultra XC can make sense when a small amount needs to add a bit more shape or lift.

How long does a half syringe of lip filler last?

Both Volbella XC and Ultra XC showed results lasting up to about a year in their FDA lip studies. A smaller amount may fade a little sooner, and everyone breaks filler down at a different rate.

Can I add more later?

Yes. Many people start with a half syringe and add more at a follow-up once swelling settles, usually after about two weeks.

Male Lip Filler with Juvéderm Volbella

Lip filler is uncommon for men — and done well, rarer still. Here’s how I added natural volume, corrected side-to-side asymmetry, and kept a masculine lip using Juvéderm Volbella.
