Full Syringe of Lip Filler: What $500 Gets You, and Volbella XC vs. Ultra XC

If you want lips that look noticeably fuller but still natural, a full syringe is usually the sweet spot. At Serene Med Spa in Barboursville, West Virginia and Hudson, Ohio, a full syringe of lip filler is $500, the same price at both offices. Here’s what that includes, and how I decide between the two Juvéderm fillers we use.

What a full syringe can do

One milliliter is only about one-fifth of a teaspoon, but in the lips it goes a long way. With a full syringe we can usually:

• Add visible volume to both the upper and lower lip
• Define the border and shape the Cupid’s bow
• Correct side-to-side asymmetry
• Balance the upper and lower lip. For most people I place roughly 70% in the upper lip and 30% in the lower, then adjust for your anatomy

Volbella XC vs. Ultra XC: which is better?

Both are FDA-approved hyaluronic acid fillers from the Juvéderm family, both contain lidocaine, and both can be dissolved if needed. The difference is in the gel.

When I choose Juvéderm Volbella XC

• You want a soft, natural result, not an obvious change
• You have fine lines around the mouth. Volbella XC is FDA-approved for both lips and perioral lines
• You’re new to filler, or swelling is a concern before an event
• You want to hydrate and smooth the lips while keeping their natural movement

When I choose Juvéderm Ultra XC

• You want noticeably fuller lips with more projection
• Your lips are naturally thin and need more structure
• You want a more defined shape or border

Ultra XC has a higher concentration of hyaluronic acid (24 mg/mL vs. 15 mg/mL) and a firmer feel, so it adds more volume per syringe. Volbella XC is softer and smoother, and it generally swells less. In the FDA studies, both lasted up to about a year in the lips. In the Ultra XC trial, more than 78% of patients were still satisfied with their lips at one year.

There’s no single “best” lip filler. The best one is the one that fits your lips and your goals, and that’s what we decide together at your consultation.

How much does a full syringe cost elsewhere?

National price guides often list a full syringe of lip filler at $600 to $1,000 or more, higher in big cities. At Serene, it’s $500 for Juvéderm, with a physician-led team, in both Barboursville and Hudson.

What to expect

• Treatment time: About 30 to 45 minutes, including numbing.
• Swelling: Most noticeable for the first 2 to 3 days. Bruising is possible, so plan around big events.
• Final result: Shows at about two weeks, which is when we like to take after photos.
• Maintenance: Many people touch up once or twice a year. A half syringe is often enough for a touch-up.

Is one syringe of lip filler enough?

For most people, yes. One syringe gives a noticeable but natural increase in fullness. Some people build up over two visits for a bigger change.

Is Volbella or Ultra XC better for lips?

Neither is better for everyone. Volbella XC is softer and subtler with less swelling, and it also treats lip lines. Ultra XC is firmer and adds more volume and shape. We choose based on your lips and goals.

How long does a full syringe of lip filler last?

In their FDA lip studies, both Volbella XC and Ultra XC showed results lasting up to about a year. How long yours lasts depends on your metabolism, activity and the product used.

Does lip filler hurt?

Both products contain lidocaine, a numbing medicine, and we can also use topical numbing. Most people describe it as pressure and mild stinging.

Can lip filler be dissolved?

Yes. Both are hyaluronic acid fillers, which can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if needed.
