One of the most common questions I hear during consultations comes with a little hesitation: “Is laser hair removal safe for my skin?” Many patients with medium, olive, brown or deep skin tones were told years ago that lasers were only for people with fair skin and dark hair. That advice made sense for the technology of the 1990s. It is much less true today.
In this article I’ll explain why skin tone matters, how the right wavelength and settings change the picture, what risks still exist, and how you can prepare so your treatment is both safe and effective.
Laser hair removal works on a principle called selective photothermolysis. The laser’s light is absorbed by melanin, the pigment in the hair shaft and follicle. That light turns into heat, and the heat damages the follicle’s ability to grow new hair.
The challenge is that melanin also lives in the skin itself. The deeper your natural skin tone, the more melanin sits in the upper layers competing with the hair for that energy. If the laser isn’t chosen and set carefully, the skin can absorb too much heat, which can lead to:
So the goal is simple to state and requires care to achieve: deliver enough energy to the follicle while protecting the surrounding skin.
Clinicians often describe skin using the Fitzpatrick scale, which runs from type I (very fair, always burns) to type VI (deeply pigmented, rarely burns). Your type helps guide which laser and which settings make sense.
Longer wavelengths, such as the 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser, are absorbed less by melanin in the upper skin and travel deeper toward the follicle. That’s why they are widely considered the safer choice for darker skin types. Shorter wavelengths, like alexandrite, can be very efficient on lighter skin but carry more risk on deeper tones.
Beyond wavelength, the pulse duration, energy level and skin cooling all matter. Longer pulse durations let the skin shed heat more gradually while the thicker hair follicle holds onto it. Contact cooling or chilled air protects the surface during each pulse.
For many patients, especially those with deeper or recently tanned skin, we perform a small test area first and check it before treating a larger zone. It adds a little time up front and gives us useful information about how your skin responds.

Here is the limit I share with every patient. Because the laser needs pigment in the hair to target, it works poorly or not at all on white, gray, light blonde or red hair. That is true regardless of skin tone. If most of your unwanted hair is very light, laser may disappoint you, and electrolysis is worth discussing instead.
The ideal hair for laser is dark and coarse. The good news is that many people with deeper skin tones also have dark hair, which is a great target when the right wavelength is used.
